Euler was perhaps the most prolific publisher of mathematical ideas. Born in 1707, he completed his Master's Degree in 1723 (yes, at the age of 16) by comparing the ideas of Descartes and Newton. At the age of 19, he accepted a professorial position at the St. Petersburg Academy of the Sciences. Euler married Katharina Gsell in 1734 after becoming the Chair of the Mathematics Department. He fathered 13 children with his wife but unfortunately all but 5 died in their infancy. In 1741, Euler accepted the post of Director of Mathematics at the Berlin Academy. He also advised the government on lotteries, insurance, annuities and pensions and artillery. In 1766, Euler returned to St. Petersburg after political frustration in Berlin. He then went completely blind. Euler died in 1783. It took nearly 50 additional years for St. Petersburg to complete the publication of the rest Euler's work.

Upon going blind, Euler stated, "Now I will have less distraction."
