This jar of jelly beans will be on display in your Integrated 1 classroom for one period only.

 

Enter to win

On your own paper, submit an entry to Mr. Eastman in room F222 with the following:

  • Your name and math teacher.
  • Your estimate of the number of jelly beans in the jar.
  • Your mathematical support for your estimate. (Be sure to use words, numbers, and/or diagrams to show how you arrived at your estimation.)
Note: Entries are limited to one per person.

Prize

The entire jar including the jelly beans inside!

Judges will award the prize according to the following:

  • Entry is complete.
  • Entry is on time. (Submitted before 8:00am Friday, March 7 2008.)
  • Entry estimate is the closest* to the actual number of jelly beans in the jar.
  • In the event of of multiple entries which have equally close estimates, judges will award the prize to the entry that they believe is the clearest in mathematical communication.

 

Note: This contest is limited to current Integrated 1 students at Ferris High School.

*closest: the value of how "close" an estimate is will be caculated by the simple distance between the estimate and actual. For example, 8 and 12 are equally close to 10.
