Lesson & Assignment 1.01 - Investigating Patterns
Approximate completion time: 1 hour
1. Take a look at some patterns. Walkways, floorings, and walls are full of patterns. I've found a few quick patterns in galleries, stores, and house help sites. Here are some to check out (just look, don't get lost in all the details). Take 5-10 minutes and explore. Give the images a click and enjoy the patterns.
In a short paragraph, describe one type of pattern that you particularly liked and why you liked it.
2. Consider this pattern of hexagonal tiles:
Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3 Stage 4The pattern could continue on indefinitely. Finish the table to show what's happening.

Explain how you could find out how many hexagons would there be in stage 10? 20? 1000?
Explain how you would find out what the perimeter would be in stage 10? 20? 1000?
Explain how you would find the number of hexagons for any stage number (you can use the variable n if you'd like.)
Explain how you would find the perimeter for any stage number (you can use the variable n if you'd like.)
3. Explain what you think we mean in math by the word "variable." Try your own explanation first. Then feel free to do some research if you'd like.
